A data warehouse pulls data out of your separate systems — ERP, CRM, production, finance — and organizes it into one clean, consistent source of truth. If you're manually exporting spreadsheets from multiple systems to build a monthly report, or if two departments have "two versions of the truth," you need one.
Operational systems are built to run transactions, not to answer big-picture questions across your business.
